I want to cut back. It’s very difficult. Do you have any tips?
Cutback is a technique that comes back when you are out of the power zone of the wave. Cutbacks are easier to understand if you divide them into four turns. This time, I will talk about the cutback method.

How to do front side cut back /right break/regular stance
I will explain in the case of a regular stance surfer. The cut back consists of the following four turns.
① Front side top turn
② Backside bottom turn
③ Backside top turn
④ Front side bottom turn
If you can make each of the above four turns, the cut back will be successful.

①Front side top turn
・ Turn after speeding up.
・ Bend your back foot knees a lot.
・ Sink the rail on the heel side of the back foot.
Don’t use the front foot rails too much. It’s easier to turn with just the back foot rails.
・ Twist your face and body to the left.
・ Look to your back.
・ Lower your posture.Touch your butt and left hand to the surface of the water.
・Since it has centrifugal force, it does not fall even at the top of the wave.
②Back side bottom turn
・ Keep your posture low. Bend your knees until your hips touch the waves.
・ Twist your head and body to the left.
・Sink the heel rail on the back foot. Don’t sink the front foot rail too much. That is easier to turn.
・ Look at the top of the wave.
・Continue the turn until the direction of the surfboard changes.
③Back side top turn
・ Extend the bent knee for a moment and return the rail on the heel side to flat.
・Immediately bend the knees of the back foot and sink the rail on the toe side of the back foot.
Do not sink the front foot rail too much. That is easier to turn.
・ Look at the bottom of the wave.
・ Return the upper body that was twisted to the left to the right.
・ Keep your posture low. Bend your knees until your right hand and knee touch the waves.
・Since it has centrifugal force, it does not fall even at the top of the wave.
④Front side bottom turn
・ Keep your posture low. Lower it so that your right hand and right knee touch the waves.
・Sink the rail on the toe side of the back foot. Don’t sink the front foot rails. That is easier to turn.
・ Look at the top of the wave.
・ If the surfboard turns in the direction you are heading, the cutback is successful.

Did you know how to cut back?
The cutback was four turns. I understand very well. If I turn one by one, I feel like I can cut back.
It’s difficult to think about four turns while surfing. Before going to the sea, it’s a good idea to organize the four cutback turns in your head.
Why only sink the back foot rail?

Sinking the front foot rails makes it harder to turn the surfboard. Sinking only the back foot rails reduces the contact between the surfboard and the waves. The small area in contact with the waves makes it easier to operate the surfboard. Controlling the surfboard with the backfoot is also explained in detail in the following articles.
Read below to understand the state of the rails during bottom and top turns.
Acceleration techniques are also important for a successful cutback. For details, see the following articles.
Next, I’ll explain the cutback of the left break wave.

The cutback of the left break is also four turns. The only difference is the order of the four turns.
That’s right.
If you can make four turns, you can cut back on either a right break or a left break.

Cutback common mistake/Stall in the middle of the turn
Help. I can’t cut back yet.
What kind of mistake are you making?
It will stall in the middle of the turn.
Speed is important for cutback. If you stall, you will not be able to make a turn and will fall into the sea.
What do you think is the cause?
Which do you think is easier to cut back, A or B?
It is A. Because cutback is a technique to return from a place where the wave power is weak to a place where the wave power is strong.
The correct answer is B. At position A, the wave angle is loose, so it stalls. At position B, the waves are steep. Because it is a steep angle, it does not stall. At position B, cutback is easy.
Secret practice for successful cutback
Here, I will only teach you a secret practice method. You can get great acceleration.
Never tell anyone.
I promise. I won’t tell anyone.
I will explain with a regular stance surfer. When making a turn in position B, grab the rail on the right with your right hand. Only this.
Do you grab the rail? Is it effective?
Of course. By grabbing the rail, you will be in a low position and stable. And the rail on the left sinks perpendicular to the wave. The bottom of the surfboard does not come in contact with water. Therefore, it does not receive the resistance of water. That’s why it gives you great speed.

Do you have any tips for grabbing the rail?
It’s hard to grab the rail. Most of the time you don’t have time to bend your knees. Start bending your knees early in time for the turn.
Thank you. I will try it.
